In this thesis Q Methodology is used to systematic study of human subjectivity outside the research field in which it was originally developed by the psychologist W. Stephenson in 1935. Contrary to quantitative research methods, the main aim of Q Methodology is to identify the existing perspectives on a specific topic and not to quantify how many individuals adhere or not to those perspectives. The essence of this methodology is that it makes a non-conventional use of the multivariate statistical method of factor analysis: shifting the attention from variables to persons, the correlation matrix expresses the degree of correlation of each person towards any other person. The introductive part briefly examines principles and procedural aspects of this method. Then, four empirical applications are presented. The first application studies mobility behaviour in 6 towns all belonging to the province of Ancona. The second study explores the acceptability of some innovations in low input and organic dairy sector in four European countries. Follow two studies on the use of images to assess the subjective perception of familiar and unfamiliar landscapes: the first is an assessment of the perceived impact of photovoltaic systems installations in rural and urban in relation to the Marche region; while the second explores the subjective importance of the Mediterranean deep-‐sea ecosystems services by the use of different conditions of instruction. The thesis aims to deepen the knowledge of Q Methodology, demonstrating its potential value of revealing individuals’ perspectives. Finally, this work has the objective of expanding the use of this methodology in socio‐economic and environmental research.
In questa tesi si utilizza la Q Methodology per studiare in modo sistematico la soggettività umana al di fuori del campo di ricerca in cui è stata originariamente sviluppata dallo psicologo americano W. Stephenson nel 1935. A differenza dei metodi di ricerca quantitativa, la Q Methodology ha come obiettivo principale quello di individuare le prospettive esistenti su un determinato argomento e non di quantificare quanti individui aderiscano o meno a tali prospettive. L’essenza della metodologia sta in un utilizzo non convenzionale del metodo di analisi statistica multivariata conosciuto come analisi fattoriale: spostando l’attenzione dalle variabili alle persone la matrice di correlazione esprime il grado di correlazione di ciascun soggetto verso ogni altro soggetto. La parte introduttiva esamina brevemente i principi e le procedure del metodo. Dopodiché, vengono presentate le quattro applicazioni empiriche. La prima applicazione studia i comportamenti di mobilità in sei principali comuni della provincia di Ancona. Il secondo studio esplora l’accettabilità di alcune innovazioni nella filiera lattiero-‐casearia low-‐input e biologica in quattro paesi Europei. Seguono due studi sull’uso delle immagini per uno studio sulla percezione soggettiva di paesaggi familiari e non: il primo fa una valutazione dell’impatto paesaggistico degli impianti fotovoltaici in ambiente rurale ed urbano relativamente nella regione Marche, mentre il secondo esplora l’importanza soggettiva dei servizi eco-‐sistemici in ambiente marino profondo mediterraneo in base a differenti condizioni di istruzione. La tesi ha come obiettivo quello di approfondire la conoscenza sulla Q Methodology, dimostrando le sue potenzialità nel rivelare le prospettive degli individui. Infine, questo lavoro mira ad estendere l’uso della metodologia nelle scienze ambientali, economiche e gestionali.
