n the last few decades, thanks to technological progress and to the introduction of several new bronchoscopic ancillary techniques, the diagnostic and therapeutical possibilities of bronchoscopy have been greatly improved. The optimal management of most of the respiratory pathological conditions can not be conducted without the employment of bronchoscopic techniques. The aim of this review is to present the most recent technological innovations in bronchoscopy. The different new bronchoscopic developments are presented on the basis of the main clinical fields of possible application: diagnosis of airway preneoplastic lesions and early cancer, lung cancer staging, diagnosis of peripheral pulmonary lesions and of diffuse infiltrative lung diseases, and treatment of emphysema and asthma.
