Engaging students in a meaningful learning is essential for receiving an intellectual and proficient level of education. This paper investigates the impact of introducing a student-centered learning environment into the practical section of organic spectroscopy course by infusing the critical thinking skill, causal explanation. The protocol used is a multi-step strategy and students’ perceptions were recorded and evaluated. The study illustrated that causal explanation skill is a potential tool for understanding and utilizing, efficiently, 1H NMR spectroscopy. It also discusses the benefits of the transition of teaching methodology from teacher centered to student centered methodology for future use
