Physiological and chemical data, together with genetic relatedness (DNA-DNA hybridisation), provide sufficient evidence for conferring species rank on Staphylococcushyicussubsp. hyicus and Staphylococcushyicussubsp. chromogenes. Strain NCTC 10530, the type strain S. hyicussubsp. chromogenes, is designated the type strain of Staphylococcuschromogenes (Devrieseetal.) comb. nov. A scheme for the differentiation of S. chromogenes from other staphylococcal species is given.
