«Surveillance program on a sanitary landfill in the Neapolitan area». The negative impact of a sanitary landfill on the surrounding community, from both quantitative and qualitative points of view, seems to be closely correlated with its planning and management. Careful supervision of the activity in the landfill, analytical monitoring of certain physical, chemical and biological parameters, and identification of situations that pose potential or actual risk to the population and/or environment are, in the authors' opinions, essential for correct landfill management. This paper describes methods and fìndings from a surveillance program conducted in a landfill near Naples between June 1987 and December 1988. Periodic evaluation of physical, chemical and biological aspects of ground-water, leachate, air, microbial aerosols, noise levels and fermentation gases were made. Other parameters, such as animai and parasite control, equipment inspection and maintenance and employee health, were also examined. On the basis of their findings, suggestions are made for a uniform program of health and sanitation control in these environments.
