In the light of the regulations in force concerning hazardous and toxic waste disposal, the Authors carried out in Campania a survey on industrial production of the above mentioned solid wastes. Goals of this study were both to define waste production in quantitative and qualitative terms and to get a first estimate of the size of this phenomenon in Campania. A sample of 311 factories representative of the different kinds of production of the manufacturing industry and particularly leather, metal, machinery, chemicals and oil industries, has been examined, using an open ended questionnaire administered by trained interviewers. The amount of hazardous and toxic wastes produced by the examined factories has been evaluated 202000 t/year. Using coefficients of waste production/employee/year computed for each different kind of production area, it has been possible to estimate in 521000 t/year the total amount of hazardous and toxic wastes produced by manufactoring industry in Campania.
