The spin density distribution in the indolinonic nitroxide radical 1,2-dihydro-2-methyl-2-phenyl-3H-indole-3-oxo-1-oxyl has been determined by polarized neutron diffraction measurements. An analytical description of the spin density is obtained from the experimental data using the multipole expansion method. The results show that the unpaired electron is not confined to the N-0 group but is delocalised over the indolinic moiety.

Abstract

The spin density distribution in the indolinonic nitroxide radical 1,2-dihydro-2-methyl-2-phenyl-3H-indole-3-oxo-1-oxyl has been determined by polarized neutron diffraction measurements.
