Renewable sources are a central element of the energy transition and decarbonization process. Among renewable technologies, wind energy has achieved widespread deployment, owing to continuous advances in materials, manufacturing processes and aerodynamic design. These developments results in construction of increasingly large and efficient wind turbines. Throughout their service life, estimated at around 20 years, wind turbines operate in harsh environmental conditions leading to several degradation mechanisms that may compromise their aerodynamic efficiency and, consequently, their energy production. For this reason, understanding the physical mechanisms responsible for performance degradation and identifying mitigation strategies are essential for improving the reliability and long-term efficiency of wind energy systems. One of the main causes of aerodynamic performance degradation is leadingedge roughness, which results from the interaction between the blade surface and atmospheric agents. The leading edge is particularly vulnerable to this phenomenon. The roughness can occur either as material removal (Leading Edge Erosion), or as material accumulation (fouling). This thesis addresses the problem from a twofold perspective. First, it investigates the aerodynamic impact of LEE on a NACA 642-014A airfoil, whose thickness is representative of efficient outer blade sections. Second, it extends the analysis to the intermediate region of the blade by assessing the effectiveness of passive boundary-layer control devices, namely turbulators and vortex generators, on a Wortmann FX-66-S-196V1 airfoil. The devices aim to mitigate or suppress separation phenomena analogous to those induced by fouling. The research combines experimental and numerical approaches in order to provide a comprehensive characterization of the flow phenomena observed. Wind tunnel tests and computational fluid dynamics simulations were carried out at low Reynolds numbers. The integrated methodology allows to evaluate both the performance losses associated with leading-edge damage and the capability of passive devices to recover or preserve aerodynamic efficiency in degraded operating conditions.
