PEARLING PATH. Un progetto narrativo per il patrimonio UNESCO

The Pearling Path project is a paradigmatic case of innovation in UNESCO cultural heritage management and valorisation processes, in line with the contemporary debate that interprets heritage not merely as a set of monumental assets, but as a cultural practice and an identity-building process. The serial site “Pearling, testimony of an island economy”, inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2012, represents an advanced example of integration between protection, management, and urban transformation, grounded in the testimonial value of the pearling culture that historically shaped the identity of Muharraq, Bahrain. The contribution reconstructs the theoretical and operational framework that guided the definition of core zones and buffer zones as proactive devices, closely linked to an urban masterplan developed prior to UNESCO inscription. Within this context, the Pearling Path is conceived as a flexible and transformative interpretative tool, capable of connecting the material and immaterial components of the site within a shared “grand narrative” addressed to both visitors and local communities. The article further explores the holistic nature of the project, which combines restoration, contemporary architecture, public space design, and cultural programmes, avoiding the musealisation of the historic fabric and instead promoting inclusive urban regeneration. The Pearling Path thus emerges as a model of territorial valorisation that moves beyond traditional constraint-based regulation, proposing design-oriented prescriptions focused on quality, sustainability, and accessibility. The experience of Muharraq demonstrates how conscious transformation can become a key instrument in ensuring the present and future vitality of cultural heritage.

Il progetto Pearling Path è analizzato come caso paradigmatico di innovazione nei processi di gestione e valorizzazione del patrimonio culturale UNESCO, alla luce del dibattito contemporaneo che interpreta il patrimonio non solo come insieme di beni monumentali, ma come pratica culturale e costruzione identitaria. Il sito seriale “Pearling, testimony of an island economy”, iscritto nella World Heritage List nel 2012, rappresenta un esempio avanzato di integrazione tra tutela, gestione e progetto di trasformazione urbana, fondato sul valore testimoniale della cultura della pesca e del commercio delle perle che ha storicamente strutturato l’identità di Muharraq, in Bahrain. Il contributo ricostruisce il quadro teorico e operativo che ha guidato la definizione delle core zone e delle buffer zone come dispositivi proattivi, strettamente connessi a un masterplan di riqualificazione urbana elaborato prima dell’iscrizione UNESCO. In questo contesto, il Pearling Path si configura come strumento interpretativo flessibile e trasformativo, capace di connettere i beni materiali e immateriali del sito all’interno di una “grand narrative” condivisa, rivolta sia ai visitatori sia alle comunità locali. Si evidenzia il carattere olistico del progetto, che combina restauro, architettura contemporanea, spazio pubblico e programmi culturali, evitando la musealizzazione del tessuto storico e promuovendo invece una rigenerazione urbana inclusiva. Il Pearling Path emerge così come modello di valorizzazione territoriale capace di superare una regolamentazione vincolistica tradizionale, proponendo prescrizioni progettuali orientate alla qualità, alla sostenibilità e alla fruizione. L’esperienza di Muharraq dimostra come la trasformazione consapevole possa diventare strumento chiave per garantire la vitalità presente e futura del patrimonio culturale.
