This paper dwells on the growing interaction between new technologies and urban areas, highlighting the risks for the protection of the human person and his or her well-being arising from the emergence of smart cities. In this scenario, a central role is played by the principle of reasonableness as a concrete balancing criterion between the development of smart ecosystems and the fair access to and distribution of resources and services among the population.
