A Renaissance Praise of Cardano’s Dietetics. Andrea Bacci: Galen and Cardano on Hygiene and Prophylaxis · In a letter to his patron Francesco Bandini Piccolomini, Archbishop of Siena, the physician Andrea Bacci (1524-1600) praises the treatise De sanitate tuenda by Girolamo Cardano, published posthumously in Rome in 1580. Galen, as is well known, had already written a treatise under the same title that had a lasting impact on medicine. Bacci’s letter, which is here edited and published for the first time, compares Galen’s and Cardano’s views on diet, and argues in favour of Cardano, who is depicted as representing the contemporary world in contrast to pagan antiquity.
