Recent new events in the United Kingdom have attracted attention to a group of degenerative diseases common to man and animals: Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSE). The most frequent of these is Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, diffused world-wide and responsible for iatrogenic forms. Modalities of pathogenic agent inactivation and precautions to be adopted for infected materials and patients are controversial. The aim of this paper is to examine current scientific knowledge and international re-commendations regarding disease prevention and control.

Abstract
Recent new events in the United Kingdom have attracted attention to a group of degenerative diseases common to man and animals: Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSE). The most frequent of these is Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, diffused world-wide and responsible for iatrogenic forms. Modalities of pathogenic agent inactivation and precautions to be adopted for infected materials and patients are controversial.
