Andrea Bacci (1524-1600) was one of the illustrious physicians coming from the Marche region and active in Rome in the early modern period. In fact, he was born in Sant’Elpidio a Mare, completed his university studies in Siena, and then moved to Rome, after working as a municipal physician in small towns. In Rome, where he spent the rest of his life, he belonged to cardinals’ courts, became personal physician of Sixtus V, pope from 1585 to 1590, taught medical simples at the university, directed the Vatican gardens and composed many works, the most important of which were two encyclopedias: one on waters, De thermis, the other on wines, De naturali vinorum historia. The article aims to present Bacci’s life and work based on the research carried out thus far, delving into some aspects concerning Bacci’s relationship with the city of Rome, which must be considered his muse and patron, and reconstructing its evolution.
Andrea Bacci (1524-1600) è tra i medici illustri, originari delle Marche, che furono attivi a Roma nella prima Età moderna. Nasce infatti a Sant’Elpidio a Mare, compie gli studi universitari a Siena, e quindi si sposta a Roma, dopo aver lavorato come medico condotto in centri minori. A Roma, dove trascorre il resto della sua vita, frequenta importanti prelati, è archiatra di Sisto V, papa dal 1585 al 1590, insegna i semplici all’università, è responsabile degli orti vaticani e compone numerose opere, le più importanti delle quali due enciclopedie: l’una sulle acque termali, De thermis, l’altra sui vini, De naturali vinorum historia. L’articolo mira a presentare la vita e l’opera di Bacci sulla base delle ricerche finora svolte, approfondendo alcuni aspetti che riguardano il rapporto di Bacci con la città di Roma, da considerarsi sua musa e committente, e ricostruirne l’evoluzione.
