A perturbation method for the analysis of light propagation in an elliptical three-layer fibre is presented. The objective of obtaining high birefringence and an extended interval of single-polarization operation is investigated. In this respect, the use of an azimuthally modulated index in the inner cladding layer is demonstrated to be effective.
