This paper aims to examine the role that private remedies and, in particular, consumer protection can play in ensuring effective protection of the environment and fundamental humanrights. The analysis of the most recent legislative acts of the European Union and the measuresadopted by some courts in the European Union and independent administrative authoritiesconfirms that compensatory and injunctive protections having their roots in consumer protection. These remedies, if applied in light of the principle of sustainable development, caneffectively contribute to a more adequate environmental protection than more traditional andpublic law remedies.
