This paper investigates within the theoretical fields of the resource based view and the knowledge based view the supply chain relationships maintained by manufacturing producers with their suppliers in order to initiate innovative relational processes that improve the competitive performance of companies in the supply chain. Firms can develop supply innovative processes to seek out and transfer external knowledge into their own innovation activities. They can also create channels to move unutilized internal knowledge to other organizations in the surrounding environment.
