A series of ligands derived from 2,3-butanedione and mono-, di- and tri-alkoxy substituted benzoylhydrazines is synthesised and characterised; they react with nickel(II) acetate giving Ni(ligand-2H) square planar complexes. The complex with six peripheral dodecyloxy side-chains exhibits a columnar (Colhd) mesophase; the X-ray structure of a model complex is also reported.
