The transition to a more environmental sustainable industry depends on the increase of energy efficiency of industrial processes. This efficiency is required by European policies and market laws, but until today energy efficiency has been based on classical management techniques. More recently, several industries have chosen the lean philosophy with the aim to reduce waste and to increase their competitiveness and flexibility. One of the main lean tools is Value Stream Mapping, which can be used to reduce process inefficiencies, eliminating bottlenecks and the logistic criticalities. However, lean tools do not consider energy an important driver to evaluate during optimisation strategies. Criticalities are often hidden, or sometimes they are clear but underestimated. An energetic approach based on lean philosophy can considerably contribute to find and to eliminate energy waste. Now the question is: How is it possible to find needless consumption within the process, and bringing it out? The answer is in the realisation of an energetic map of production processes that takes into account the energy consumed in relation to the value creation. Thus, the presented work starts from the analysis of the state of the art related to the sustainable manufacturing issues, considering green manufacturing, energy management, the lean approach, and the first attempts of Energy Value Stream Mapping realisation, up to a new method capable of evaluating energy consumption. This research work aims at defining a new (hybrid) method combining the energy management with the lean approach, through the Energy Value Stream Mapping. This system consists in a mapping of energy flows dividing them in value added consumption, non-value added consumption and waste, using a simple and intuitive graphical map. The proposed method has been developed and tested in a manufacturing industry analysing the main energetic vectors. The results show that such an approach can significantly help the factory in defining an energy consumption reduction strategy, acting both at the structural level and at the behavioural level.
La transizione verso un’industria maggiormente ecosostenibile passa soprattutto da una maggiore efficienza energetica dei processi produttivi. Tale efficienza è richiesta da leggi di mercato e dalle nuove politiche europee, ma fino ad oggi si è basata su un sistema classico di gestione dell’energia. Da tempo invece, diverse aziende hanno approcciato la filosofia lean con lo scopo di ridurre gli sprechi e aumentare la propria competitività e flessibilità. Uno dei principali strumenti lean è la Value Stream Mapping, molto utile per ridurre le inefficienze di processo eliminando i colli di bottiglia e le criticità logistiche. Tuttavia gli strumenti lean non contemplano l’energia come voce importante da analizzare. Le criticità sono spesso nascoste, talvolta invece sono sotto l’occhio di tutti ma sottovalutate, un approccio energetico su base lean può aiutare notevolmente ad individuare ed eliminare gli sprechi energetici. La domanda da porsi è: come è possibile individuare i consumi che non servono o che sono superflui all’interno del processo e portarli alla luce? La risposta sta nella realizzazione di una mappa energetica dei processi produttivi che tenga conto della creazione del valore delle attività produttive. Il presente lavoro parte quindi prima da un’analisi dello stato dell’arte legato al tema del sustainbale manufacturing, dalla parte di green manufacturing, energy management, approccio lean e primi tentativi di Energy Value Stream Mapping, fino ad arrivare ad un nuovo metodo di valutazione dei consumi. Il lavoro di ricerca condotto tende quindi ad unire la parte di efficienza energetica a quella lean proponendo un nuovo metodo (ibrido) per l’analisi dei consumi energetici e valutazione delle sue criticità attraverso l’Energy Value Stream Mapping. Tale sistema consiste in una mappatura dei flussi energetici suddivisi in consumo a valore, non a valore e spreco, adottando un sistema grafico semplice e intuitivo. Il metodo proposto è stato sviluppato e testato all’interno di un’azienda manifatturiera analizzando i principali vettori energetici di maggior utilizzo. I risultati ottenuti mostrano come un approccio di questo tipo possa aiutare sensibilmente l’azienda nella strategia di riduzione dei consumi agendo sia sulla parte strutturale che comportamentale.
