This thesis investigates the process of patent validation by the application of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method, widely known in Marketing sector. The AHP method, developed in 1971 by Saaty, is generally used to define the cost/benefits realtion of a project when is not easy to determinate the economic value of the project, considering all aspects of the surrounding environment, that can influence the economic evaluation. According to this methodology, each problem, usually hard to be solved as a complex system, is hierarchically decomposed defining Factors and Criteria. Each of them (Factors and Criteria) has a weight that is used to valuate priorities and/or relevant aspects among different alternatives (Multi-alternative Project). Following the same logic, a Patent hierarchically examined, considering the principle aspects, can be completely valuated through a “quali-quantitative” approach that can drastically reduce the risks of errors when a Patent is written down, specially in a contest high indecision. The first part of this starts with a wide review of the current methods used to assess the value of a Patent. This introduction focuses also on strategic and managerial issues about the Industrial Property. The second part presents the application of this “quali-quantitative” (ATP) approach to some studies, one of them developed in collaboration with Taiwan University. This work contributes to describe the potential value in the application of the ATP methodology to the evaluation of a Patent thus it can support a “consistent” process of elaboration of Claims that is used as basis of the legal content of the release.
