A new class of different lipids bearing a nitroxide radical moiety was synthesized and used in the preparation of multilamellar phosphatidylcholine liposomes. Analysis of the corresponding EPR spectra allowed to get information about the distribution of these free radicals within the liposome structure, and the resulting antioxidant activity was measured by means of the TBARS assay. A correlation between the functionalised lipids antioxidant activity, their dipolar moment (computed by DFT) and their EPR features could be envisaged.
