Abstract The relationship between hydrogeological setting and water supply of a territorial province (Pesaro-Urbino AATO) of Marche region is analysed and the choices, made in the recent past without considering the real potentiality of the aquifers, are emphasized. Besides, the hydrogeological features with the waters tapped from the different aquifers, the water supply systems and the aqueduct networks are examined. The large number of data derived from previous studies and from public and private bodies is organised in GIS format; the present data elaboration represents an useful example that may simplfy, for example, the aquifers hazard analysis and the hydrogeological maps production. Finally, this study shows the considerable water potentiality of the limestone and Val Marecchia Alloctoni aquifers, so remarkable as to satisfy the water requirement of the zone. Therefore, the future of drinking water supplies must be directed to the limestone aquifers and not to the use of purified fluvial waters.
