Abstract

Slabs of continuous steel-concrete composite viaducts are usually constructed for segments on the unpropped steel girders. The contemporary action of restrained shrinkage and of forces due to the construction phases may lead to the concrete early cracking. This paper presents a study on the effectiveness of various casting techniques that may be used to control tensile stresses in continuous composite bridges. Numerical results obtained analysing a case study by means of a dedicated computer program, capable of taking into account effects of structural changes and of early shrinkage, are discussed. The various actions (self-weight, thermal, endogeneous and drying shrinkage) are considered separately in order to understand mechanisms that are responsible for tensile stresses and to evaluate the effectiveness of the various construction techniques considered.
