The paper presents and evaluates the experience of New Europe Countries with respect to foreign banks by looking into both first-order and second-order effects. After a brief descriptive amalysis of the role played by international competitors we investigate the firs-order effects comparing the performances of foreign and local institutions through a panel estimate of the determinants of banking profitability and cost efficiency. To analyse the second-order effects of foreign ownership we investigate international banks' growth strategies and investments in the region usung a microeconomic approach to gain insights into future market developments.
