This chapter presents a selection from the literature on preferences for redistribution. It discusses new factors influencing support for redistribution. More specifically it investigates the roles of trust (both interpersonal and institutional), fairness concerns, individual beliefs, perceived societal positions, and the impact of immigration and economic or natural shocks on these preferences. By examining how these elements interact, this chapter aims to offer insights into the complex dynamics behind people’s attitudes toward redistributive policies—highlighting the significant influence of psychological and socioeconomic factors—and it suggests possible future lines of research.

Abstract

This chapter presents a selection from the literature on preferences for redistribution. It discusses new factors influencing support for redistribution. More specifically it investigates the roles of trust (both interpersonal and institutional), fairness concerns, individual beliefs, perceived societal positions, and the impact of immigration and economic or natural shocks on these preferences. By examining how these elements interact, this chapter aims to offer insights into the complex dynamics behind people’s attitudes toward redistributive policies—highlighting the significant influence of psychological and socioeconomic factors—and it suggests possible future lines of research.
