The smart device market has been introducing smartwatches for many years. These devices are equipped with many functionalities, such as activity analysis for sportspeople and medical monitoring, for example for vital signs. These applications are commonly supported by user position tracking, and this is possible using the Global Positioning System (GPS) installed inside the device. To understand if the equipped GPS is usable in specific applications it is interesting to study their performances in measuring the correct position of the user. In this work, the performance analysis is conducted on three different smartwatches by comparing the results with a reference system. In this case, the analysis is limited to obstructed positions under trees and near buildings.
