La tradizione latina di Galeno e il De farmaciis

The excerpt De farmaciis, on the purgative drugs, is attributed to Hippocrates in the Greek manuscripts, and to Galen in some manuscripts containing its first medieval Latin translation. The present article is devoted to this translation, which has been already published by Hermann Schöne (1920) and Marie-Laure Monfort (2000) on the basis of ancient printed editions. The aim is (i) to show that the first Latin translation of De farmaciis was done in the 13th century, probably at the court of Manfred, King of Sicily in between 1258 and 1266, and the author was Bartholomew of Messina or a collaborator of his, on the basis of its style, tradition and reception; (ii) to provide a critical edition based on three manuscripts of the first half of the 14th century (Rome, BA, 1338; Vienna, ÖNB, 2328; Paris, BNF, lat. 6865), which are indipendent from one another, with double indeces, Graeco-Latinus and Latino-Graecus.
