In the last years efforts have been made in the welding of blanks characterised by different thicknesses. Friction stir welding of overlapped sheets allows the obtaining of joints between sheets characterised by different thicknesses without the modification of the tool axis configuration. The welding has been performed with different rotational velocities of the tool and with different welding velocities. Two different pin configurations have been considered, named the thick pin and the slender pin. It has been observed a decrease in the strength of the joint with the increase in the welding velocity, particularly with the slender pin. Such behaviour has been explained with microstructure observations of the joints.
