Four hyperthermia applicators are described: a disk and a slot applicator which are resonant structures, and a quasi-TEM microstrip line and a spiral applicator which are wideband antennas. The thermal behavior of the antennas is analyzed by means of a computer program which solves the bio-heat-transfer equation (BHTE) for any geometry of the biological body in the two-dimensional approximation. The BHTE was solved by means of the hopscotch method, a particular version of the finite-difference method, taking into account the metabolism, the blood flow, and the specific absorption rate. The results of the theoretical analysis are compared with experimental data detected by the HP 8510A network analyzer as regards electrical measurements and by an infrared camera as regards temperature patterns on phantoms.
